Wonderful right! You have decided to have a baby. It’s a big decision because itsgoing to change your life forever. But life changing in a nicest way. This would be your anxious period, but most of the couples do not experience any problems.

Consider few months earlier that you will be expecting your child. 🙂

Trying for a Baby

At the same time, bear in mind that you are at your most fertile and most likely to conceive in the middle of your menstrual cycle.

Don’t worry too much about timing sex with the day you are ovulating – research  shows that, the couple who make love through out the month tend to conceive most quickly. Just enjoy your sex life.

If you have most hectic lifestyle, try to take things more calmly than usual. There’s no real evidence that stress interferes with conception, but it certainly can not do anyt harm to reduce your stress level.

Cut down on coffee- it can take longer to conceive if you are drinking more than 3 cups a day.

Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle lasts on  average 28 days, during which  the uterus prepares itself for fertilization. The uterine lining which endometrium thickens to receive a  fertilized egg, the sheds if the egg is not fertilized. Follicle -stimulating hormone (FSH) causes an egg to mature,  and luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers its release. Oestrogen level peak just before ovulation and the rise  in progesterone stimulates the endometrium to thicken. Ovulation takes place around the day 14,  the most fertile period is  approximately 12 and 16.

Although fertility problems have become more common in the last few years, don’t worry, you are still likely to be affected. None out of 10 conceive during first year of trying and the remaining half about secondand third years.

Age makes difference

If you’re in your 20’s you are less likely to have fertility problems, so don’t rush off to your doctor if it’s been 3 months and nothing has happen. If on the other hand, you’re in your late 30’s or 40’s and you don’t have conceive within six months, it’s worth going for a referral.- if only to get some advice.

Many couples who fear they have fertility problems thinks that seeking professional help would give them a solution. And would feel they conceive at that point without the need for intervention.

Having a fertility problem investigated is a tough time for any couple. Especially if in case – you are surrounded by pregnant friends, sibilings or cousins.

Once you have decided to try for a baby it can be tempting to tell the world because you are so excited. However if you do, will have lot of questions from your family and friends. If you are expecting a baby yet, so you might want to consider keeping your decesion private for a while.

Try  not to let  your attempts to have a baby become the focal point of your life. Plan treats and holidays and don’t out things off ‘in case’ you are pregnant. If you conceive  you will have to adjust as per the needs and keeping a sense of perspective is very important right now.

Lifestyle considerations

Before you start trying for a baby and once you are pregnant, it is worth taking lifestyle check.

No one  is expecting you to change radically, but there may be some adjustments that youand your partner can make to ensure you are doing all you can do  to safeguard your health and that of your child.

Diet

Healthy eating  during  pregnancy  doesn’t differ  much from any other time. Opt for fresh fruits and vegges, limit the processed food, canned food, biscuits and cakes. And don not eat too much fat. Once you are pregnant avoid undercooked meat,make sure you wash your vegetables throughly before your salads, unpasteurized foods, cheese etc.

You won’tbe sure you are pregnant atleast two week into your pregnancy, so might have to avoid these foods when you start trying to conceive.

It is also recommended that to take a folic acid supplement- 0.4mg as soon as you start trying to get pregnant, as this has been  shown to reduce the incidence of spina bifida ( Spina bifida is a congenital malformation (birth defect) in which there is something wrong with the bone in the vertebral column, exposing the spinal cord which should be protected within the vertebral column. Spina bifida is caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube.) and other neural tube defects.

The first step towards healthy eating is to look at foods in your daily diet. Early in pregnancy,some women find that their appetite comes and goes. Try to eat a variety of foods each day. An average non-pregnant women needs about 2,200 calories per day. When you are pregnant, you need 300 calories more.

Smoking

Stop smoking when you begin trying for a baby and don’t resume after birth to avoid risking your health and the health of your baby. Each puff subjects you and the fetus too the harmful chemicals such as nicotine, tar and  carbon monoxide. If you or anyone else smokes around the baby.

He or she is exposed to the harmful effects of the smoke, so it is also vital that your partner and any other household members stop smoking around you.

Alcohol

It is unknown how much alcohol is too much during pregnancy, but research shows that it may cause  a serious condition called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome(FAS). Heavy drinking can also be cause of miscarriage. So be safe.

Do keep it in mind

When you decide you are ready to conceive, there are several important factors you should keep it in mind.

*Any medical condition for which  you or your partner takes regular medication  – talk to your doctor/specialist.

*Any Genetic or congentic condition in your own or partner’s family- talk to your doctor and if there are grounds for concern ask for a referral to a Geneticist before you start trying for a baby.

*Don’t try for a second or subsequent baby until you feel sure you can cope with  more responsibility

*Check your rubella status and take vaccination alteast 3months before you conceive.
